371 Residence
This modern brutalist villa is located in a residential neighborhood of Phnom Penh with medium population density. There is a variety of housing typologies including traditional Khmer house, flat house and mid-to-high class villa. Nearby grass field and buffer zones play a part in enabling good ventilation across the site. The road leading to the main street is quiet, hence the surrounding atmosphere is tranquil and peaceful.
Design choices are the result of the user's characteristics and preferences — bold and mysterious. We decided a dark and gloomy color palette would fit perfectly into the design with rustic finishes giving a tad of an industrial look. The foliage usage at the front terrace helps cool down the space during the day whilst giving a refreshing visual contrast to the facade.
Specific programs and design strategies such as a dedicated home office, working studios and sunken living area are vital for the user's daily routine. The office at the ground floor offers easy access for regular business guests and appointments. The bedrooms attached with working studios allow users to have their private productive space with convenient access and circulations. The living area level is lowered from the rest of the room surfaces and push a bit forward, separating the space by a decorative wooden floor-to-ceiling partition.
The open roof terrace on the second floor is designed for various family activities. It consists of an L-shaped concrete planter, a sitting area, a 6-person bar height table and a small area for a barbecue grill.
